When Was the Last Time You Did It?

title-articles.jpg (9862 bytes)

When was the last time you did it, that is, invested in yourself?

Those of us working today lead a supremely hectic life, especially business owners. Demands from Customers, Government, other employees and family can, at times, produce a feeling of being ‘overwhelmed’. These demands coupled with increasing competition add to the belief that we have to run faster and faster. Family relations become strained, supplier relations deteriorate, Customer service becomes a chore and we become cynical and skeptical.

One of the best things you can do for yourself (and your spouse and fellow employees) is to get off the treadmill. Take a break. Recharge the batteries, enjoy life a little more, get in touch with who you are and what you really want out of life. Invest in yourself.

Those of you who are skeptics (maybe from running too fast?) are probably thinking about how investing in yourself by taking a break has anything to do with making a profit, let alone managing a demanding business. Well it has everything to do with it!

Ask any high achiever, who is self-satisfied, about how they measure success and they will tell you that they look for more financial, spiritual (not necessarily religious), emotional and intellectual growth this year over last year. Chasing one dimension, puts the others at risk, and often leaves a person "unhappy". We all know people who have made a lot of money and are miserable.

I’m not suggesting for a moment that you reduce your financial goals. I’m recommending that you can achieve your goals and be much more satisfied when you improve all four of life’s dimensions. Consider your investment as maintenance for a healthy body, mind and spirt.

Take a hard look at the successful people you know and you’ll soon discover that there are a number of traits that these people have. You notice that they don’t work all hours of the day and night, seven days a week, week in and week out and they get things done. They have a high curiosity quotient and they are generally the first to try new things. They tend to invest heavily in building strong relationships, hence they are good communicators. They are in touch with who they are and they have goals. In particular successful people know the importance of rewarding and recognizing their employees, fellow-workers, family, friends and themselves, when something nice has been achieved. Lastly, they act consistently with a high degree of integrity.

These are the same people that will read an article, take a course, take a vacation, read a book, go visit their mentors and listen to others that may provide additional insight into a product, service or aspect of life. When was the last time you relaxed and learned? Go ahead and open that inquisitive mind, it just might be the best investment you could make for your business this year.
